MTD Quarterly Update Deadline: 7 August 2026 – What Sole Traders and Landlords Must Know
What Happened
HMRC has confirmed that the first Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax quarterly update deadline is 7 August 2026. This applies to sole traders and landlords with annual business or property income over £50,000. The update covers the period April–June 2026 and must be submitted using HMRC-recognized software. Over 864,000 taxpayers are in scope.
Importantly, the quarterly update is not a tax return. The annual Self Assessment return deadline remains 31 January 2027. MTD will extend to those earning over £30,000 from April 2027 and over £20,000 from April 2028.
Why It Matters
The shift to quarterly digital reporting represents a fundamental change in how UK taxpayers interact with HMRC. While no penalty points will be issued for late quarterly updates in the first year, a points-based penalty system will apply from the second year. Under this system, 4 penalty points trigger a £200 fine. Taxpayers who are digitally excluded may apply for exemptions.
Software must be HMRC-recognized and capable of sending MTD-compliant data. Using spreadsheets alone will no longer suffice unless they are linked to compatible bridging software. This creates both a compliance challenge and an opportunity to streamline record-keeping.
What Organizations Should Do
- Register early: Sign up for MTD for Income Tax well before the deadline to avoid last-minute issues.
- Choose compatible software: Ensure your accounting or tax software is HMRC-recognized for MTD submissions. Many popular platforms already support MTD.
- Prepare quarterly records: Start organizing income and expenses on a quarterly basis to meet the tight turnaround after each quarter ends.
- Monitor deadlines: Use compliance tools to track MTD deadlines and automate submissions. AIGovHub provides real-time compliance monitoring for UK tax obligations, helping you stay on top of MTD requirements and avoid penalties.
